Badlands Ranch Dog Food Review

custom oil-painted dog portraits

I’ve heard some good things about Badlands Ranch Dog Food from friends so I thought Dex, my pet beagle, should give it a try. Nothing beats actual experience and Dex has been quite clear-cut when it comes to feedback. His rating method: a clean bowl, minimally touched, untouched.

The brand is owned by celebrity Katherine Heigl but we’re putting the spotlight on their dog food product – the Superfood Complete in two variations: Superfood Complete Beef Formula and Superfood Complete Chicken Formula. With Dex, we put these kibbles to the test and went over their ingredients with a fine-toothed comb to come up with a candid, facts-based pet food review.

Here are the results of our Badlands Rach Superfood Complete dog food review.

The Verdict

Dex savored the beef variety to his heart’s content but his bowlful of the chicken also vanished almost as quickly. Taste-wise, these two are winners in Dex’s score card!

They are also made with quality, ethically-sourced proteins, not just some meat byproducts sourced from god-knows-where. The beef variety is made of 87% beef, beef heart, beef liver, and salmon, while the chicken variety is 87% free-range chicken, chicken organ meat, and salmon. The rest? Gut-healthy vegetables and fruits, vitamins and minerals.

They are low-heat air-dried for maximum nutrition, making them a dense, tasty choice especially for adult and active dogs.

The downside? The premium price may cause you to use it as a topper, and the products are not easily available in online marketplaces other than their website.

Coming Back to Badlands Ranch Dog Food

Gently air-dried using limited ingredients, the Superfood Complete in both beef and chicken varieties are being offered in the market as an ethical, nutrition maximized, and complete food using premium ingredients. Using a low-heat air-drying process, it eliminates harmful byproducts and keeps nutrients intact, giving me extra peace of mind knowing that my dear Dex is consuming none of the bad that could otherwise be hiding among the good.

Dex also likes that it tastes, smells, and feels like real meat, meaning it was minimally processed using few choice ingredients.

Their protein comes from humanely-raised and free-range animals making their products conscientiously sourced and produced, with none of the dubious fillers and meat byproducts that are actually just euphemisms for an amalgam of low-quality protein sources.

A close look at their ingredients list reveals high quality and specified protein meat and organ parts, omega-rich salmon, nutrient-dense, gut-promoting vegetables and fruits, and overall health-boosting vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Hits & Misses

The Badlands Ranch Superfood Complete have gained popularity due to their healthy premium ingredients and slow-air dry process upsides, but let’s take a balanced look and see where the products can still improve.

What Works

  • High quality and specified protein sources
  • Ethically-sourced and sustainable ingredients
  • Maximized nutrient content through slow air-drying process
  • Gluten-free, soy-free, dairy-free
  • Omega rich salmon, gut-healthy greens
  • Antioxidants, vitamins and minerals
  • Supports an anti animal cruelty and abuse foundation
  • 90-day money back guarantee
  • No fillers, additives, preservatives, colorings

What Does Not Work

  • Pricier compared to similar products
  • No grain-inclusive option
  • No vegan variety option
  • Only comes in 2 flavors, beef and chicken
  • Comes only in 24 oz packs
  • May be a bit high in carbohydrates
  • Too much added vitamins and minerals
  • Does not specify if salmon is farmed or wild-caught

Considering these and deciding that the pros carry more weight than the cons, Dex and I are still making both the beef and chicken varieties part of our dog food stash. And yes, we’re feeling good about making this choice but with the hope that the cons can be worked on by the manufacturer.

Breaking Down The Ingredient List

For a high-protein dog food suited for adult dogs of any breed, the meat of the matter is the ingredients.

More than the hype and buzzwords and celebrity-backed identity, the value of the product all boils down (or air dries) to what’s in it. So here’s an -in-depth look at Badlands Ranch dog food ingredients.

These are the good stuff that Dex has been getting so far from each bag of this product. Fyi, Dex tried both varieties – beef first for a month, and then the chicken for the following month. He loved both.

Proteins – Beef, Chicken, and Salmon

dog lifting

Compared to other less premium dog food, this is like the gourmet kind, choice-cut steak and seafood to our pet dogs! Beef meat and organs like liver and heart are not just flavorful but are also rich sources of proteins that promote muscle and tissue development and strength. The omega-rich salmon also reinforces wellness of eyesight, joints, skin, heart, brain, immunity, and digestion in dogs.

An 87% content of these protein sources in each bag is good for my active Dex. Other similar brands also offer that much, so the rest of the ingredients would likely help you decide if you’ll buy this or not.

Fruits and Vegetables

dog with fruits and veggies

You’ll see nutrient and antioxidant powerhouses like flaxseed, sweet potato, pumpkin, carrots, broccoli, chia seeds, blueberry, ginger, turmeric, lion’s mane mushroom, and selenium yeast in the list.

You can say that this product isn’t just pro muscles but also pro dog vitality, glow, strength, agility, and longevity.

The omega 3, beta-carotene, antioxidants, vitamins C and E, fiber, probiotic, and potassium among other nutrient content promote healthy skin and shiny coat, optimal cells, good digestion, healthy heart, healthy brain, and flexible joints. The fiber and healthy fat content also aid in weight management.

Just about every boost Dex needs to stay at his peak performance.

Overall, these meat, greens, crops, and vitamin and mineral ingredients make it a complete wellness food for canines so Dex and I are giving it a thumbs (and paws) up!

The Price Factor

dog with dollars

This review of Badlands Ranch dog food has to include a price comparison as a shopping guide so let’s get down to it.

Both the beef and chicken varieties come in a 24 oz bag priced at $59.95/bag.

Compared to similar products: ZiwiPeak Beef Recipe ($29.58/16 0z or $44.37 at 24 oz equivalent), Earth Animal – Dr. Bob Goldstein’s Wisdom® Dog Food ($13/1 lb or $19.5 at 24 oz equivalent), Front of the Pack ($59.99/2.5 lbs or 40 oz).

Here’s a comparative table that includes the prices, content (some offer bigger or smaller packs), approximate serving in cups, and available discount promos. Please note that the cups will depend on your dog’s size and actual intake per serving.

Product Unit Content Price
(may vary by store)
Cups (approx) Promo Discount
Badlands Ranch 24 oz/ 680 grams $59.95 3-5 Save 5% for 3 bags and 10% for 6 bags.
ZiwiPeak 16 oz /453.5 grams $29.58 3 Save 5% when you subscribe

Front of the Pack 40 oz $59.99 11.5 Save 20% when you subscribe

Badlands Ranch is pricier compared to similar products based on cost per cup so this might put you off especially if you see some ingredients are common among them like beef meat and organs, sweet potato, carrot, blueberry, pumpkin, flaxseed, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

The difference might be the extra premium-ness that’s evident in its long list of healthy ingredients that you’ll commonly find in garden salads for humans – plus the fact that they actively support their animal rights foundation through donations they make with every bag you buy.

The brand is worth considering if you want premium-grade food for your dog while supporting anti-animal cruelty causes. Dex and I want both so yes, I ordered another bag.

How Much Badlands Ranch Dog Food to Feed your Dog?

You can serve Badlands Ranch as a meal, combination, or as a topper depending on your pet’s preference, reaction, (and your budget).

In our case, I transitioned Dex to Badlands Ranch gradually based on the recommendation I found on their website. I followed it religiously and thankfully, Dex enjoyed his bowlfuls without any health hitch for both the beef and chicken varieties.

I got this information directly from them which you can also use should you choose to give this brand a shot.

  • 25% – Day 3-4
  • 50% – Day 5-6
  • 75% – Day 7-8

Jasper loves this Ranch food. I am using it as a small handful on top of his dry food. It’s really nice serving a dog food that smells healthy and clean with the knowledge that he is getting the extra vitamins and minerals not offered in other dry dog food. ! He is an almost 2 yr. old Aussie and in good health generally and I find that a handful of this food can easily be taken to the dog park for treats. Thank you, Badlands!

About The Brand

dog licking the bone

Badlands Ranch Superfood Complete, named after the Heigl ranch in Utah, is a fairly new market entrant, launched in 2022. It seeks to promote dogs’ wellness through premium ingredients, and animal life protection through its sponsored foundation, the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation.

It seems they back their slogans with their serious commitment to promote the humane treatment of animals – from boosting their health to protecting their lives.
