Irish wolfhound standing

Irish Wolfhound

Known as one of the world’s most ancient working dogs, the Irish Wolfhound is highly regarded for its long history as a hunter of Irish Elk.

Height: 32 inches

As time progressed, they have gotten more peaceful and less hostile. It was called “The Great Dog of Ireland”. This dog breed dominates our list because it can stand taller than most of its owners.

They weigh between 120lbs to 150lbs.

Great Dane

The Great Dane is a beast and one of the most predictable breeds on this list. In fact, in 2004, a Great Dane named Gibson made it into the Guinness Book of World Records as the “World’s Tallest Dog”.

Height: 30-34 inches

Gibson weighed in at 180 lb and grew to a height of 42.2 inches. Moreover, Gibson’s record has been broken by his fellow Great Danes.

Just like the Irish Wolfhound, this breed was used in early Europe as catch dogs —  a term used to describe dogs that were trained to aid in hunting animals such as boars.

They usually weigh between 110–180 lb.

Scottish Deerhound dog

Scottish Deerhound

The Scottish Deerhound is another dog of European origin, with a long history. This breed was used for hunting as well. They have, however, transitioned from hunting to being domestic dogs over time.

Height: 30-32 inches

Scottish Deerhound has a pleasant and kind demeanor and they’re an excellent choice for a large but affectionate pet.

They weigh between 38–45 kg but tend to be on the leaner side.

The Great Pyrenees Dog

The Great Pyrenees

The Great Pyrnees are also known as ‘Chien de Montagne des Pyrénées’ which translates to Pyrenean Mountain Dog. They originated from France and were employed to hunt livestock back in the day.

They have a magnificent white fur coat that protects them from the freezing conditions in the mountains.

Height: 28-32 inches

Their fur coat requires a lot of upkeep, but also adds to the beauty of their breed. They’re known for being vivacious and affectionate with their owners.

They weigh between 45–54 kg.

Kangal Shepherd Dog

Kangal Shepherd Dog

The Kangal Shepherd dog is a Turkish sheepdog that originated in Turkey. Its intimidating size serves to frighten and ward off predators.

Height: 28-31 inches

As a result, they are quite reliant when it comes to livestock and human protection. They are protective, watchful, and composed.

They weigh between 48–60 kg.

Neapolitan Mastiff Dog

Neapolitan Mastiff

Mastiffs have a big reputation for being quite large and the Neopolitan Mastiff, in particular, is one of the tallest breeds to originate from Italy. Apart from its large size and wrinkly face, the dog is bold and protective, which is why it is used as a guard dog.

Height: 26-30 inches

The best quality about these huge dogs is that they are cautious around strangers and will take precautions to eliminate the potential threat.

On the other hand, they are bright and friendly dogs that make lovely pets. They are also territorial and devoted to their owners.

They weigh between 60–70 kg.

Newfoundland dog

Newfoundland

Newfoundland is one of the tallest dog breeds. They are a large, hairy dog breed that can weigh up to 176 pounds. They are highly intelligent beings with incredible strength and power. Their water-resistant coat makes them good swimmers and water rescue dogs.

Height: 28 inches

Newfoundlands, like other tall breeds, are loyal, quiet, and docile. They are known to be one of the most ideal breeds to adopt.

They weigh between 65–80 kg.

Saluki Dog

Saluki

Archaeologists have uncovered evidence of the Saluki that dates back at least 5,000 years. They have a long, slender body and can run at speeds of up to 42.8 mph.

Height: 28 inches

They also have impressive stamina, predatory instincts, and use their eyesight to hunt prey.  Because chasing and hunting are in their nature, you must allow them to run vast distances if you adopt them.

They weigh between 65–80 kg.

Leonberger dog

Leonberger

Leonbergers are a hybrid of three of the tallest dog breeds: a Newfoundland, a Saint Bernard, and a Pyrenean Mountain Dog. They were originally bred in Germany in the 1840s by Heinrich Essig of Leonberg.

Similar to Newfoundland, Leonbergers have a water-resistant coat. They are strong, friendly to humans, and loyal, making them excellent pets.

Tall dog

Tall dogs like any other dog are loyal, protective, and great companions. But here’s the truth, tall dogs are somewhat high maintenance — in terms of feeding portions, grooming, meticulous training to prevent defiance, and even finding a place to shelter them, whether in your home or a dog shed.

Additionally, it is important to keep in mind that large dogs require continual exercise and supervision to ensure that they do not misbehave. Given their size, this can be a challenging task.
