10 Tips to Keep in Mind if You Want a Beagle

Adorable as they are, here are some tips for owning a beagle that you must keep in mind if you want to keep these small but dynamite dogs as your furry companions. Wondering what do I need to know about owning a beagle? We got you covered.

  1. Before getting a Beagle pup home, puppy proof your house. Beagles are extremely curious by nature. Along with their affinity for new smells, this can get them exploring the wrong places.
  2. Get any hazardous things out of reach of your puppy. Including charging chords, mobile chargers, medicines etc.
  3. Be extra careful about the trash can – Beagles are not picky eaters. They love to chomp on everything, particularly your kitchen trash!
  4. Be wary of their vocal nature. If you have neighbors who do not like noise, perhaps getting a Beagle isn’t the best idea.
  5. Beagles are amiable but they get friendlier if you start socializing at an early age. Make them meet new people and other dogs as much as you can
  6. Be careful about food. Beagles tend to overeat and gain weight in the blink of an eye. Steer clear of table scraps, make it a habit to feed them only the food that is meant for them.
  7. Take them for walks/jogs/runs every day! On an average, Beagles need 1-1.5 hours of moderate exercise every day.
  8. Be consistent and methodical with training. Beagles have a mind of their own and can be extremely difficult to train. So start early and follow a routine.
  9. Crate training is another crucial aspect of raising a Beagle puppy. No matter how tempted you’re to let them cuddle with you, teach them to sleep in their crate first.
  10. Be very wary of escape routes that your pup can explore. Naturally inquisitive Beagles can find their way out in ways you wouldn’t even be able to imagine.

How to Care for a Beagle?

Let’s talk about Beagle care. Taking care of a Beagle is the same as taking care of a toddler. It takes patience, love, and dedication.

They’re easy to groom, require only moderate exercising every day to keep fit, and hardly need vet visits after their vaccination doses are done with. Thanks to their size, they can fit easily in small city apartments. They’re equally comfortable in big country houses or farms.

Routine Care

Beagles don’t require much grooming but be particular with brushing. It might seem that since they have short hair, they don’t need brushing at all. But brushing plays the main role in their grooming. Brush their ears, fur and body at least weekly.

This routine care will help in the distribution of skin oils while keeping beagle’s coat healthy and clean. You may go about and use a horsehair brush or a bristle brush.

Weekly Baths

It is important to give your Beagle a nice thorough bath once every three weeks. Everyday bathing routines may reduce the natural oils on your Beagle’s body, leading to irritated skin and other problems. But remember to never apply human products on them. Visit your nearest dog supply store, purchase good quality canine shampoo, powder and conditioner.

Ear Cleansing

Beagles have big, beautiful, floppy and curtain-like ears that need thorough cleaning. Inspect the redness of ears, bites, mites, infection or any injuries. If you find any issues, reach out to your nearest veteran right away. Purchase a good quality sterile gauze pad or canine ear cleanser solution for your Beagle’s ear care

Regular Exercise Sessions

Beagles are an outdoorsy breed. They have this inherent instinct to hunt or run through open fields and playgrounds for hours. Exercise is very important for beagles.

If they are not taken out for walks or exercise, they may get frustrated. They may also end up destroying things at home. Schedule exercise hours for your Beagle twice a day. Make sure to fix different locations for your Beagle’s daily walk.

Maintain A Balanced Diet

It is very important to give your Beagle the right choice and amount of food. Feed them in moderation. A high quality diet suitable for their age is your best bet. Do not give them the food you eat.

Is Beagle the Right Pet for Me?

Well, that depends on what you want in your four-legged companion. If you want a pet that is smart as a whip, low on maintenance, but also active – Beagle’s the one for you. However, given the fact that Beagles are extremely vocal dogs, you might want to consider other breeds that do not “communicate” as much. If you’re a first-time pet owner, Beagles can give you a hard time training them.

Can Beagles be left alone all day? Ideally, no pet should be left alone for long periods of time. But you can leave your Beagle on its own for a few hours every day.
